How Do I Get a Title for a Motorcycle?

Life can seem simpler when you own a motorcycle. They can be less expensive than owning a car: less money to purchase, less to maintain, and less paperwork? Well, there is some paperwork involved in becoming a motorcycle owner.

Like most vehicles, motorcycles have titles. The title is an important document that shows your ownership of the motorcycle. If for some reason, you do not have a title to your motorcycle, you can go to your local DMV and fill out the lost title documents that are required by your state.

Most states require a bill of sale from your purchase, or the bill of sale from when the seller bought it. The DMV will most likely search the VIN (vehicle identification number) to be sure the motorcycle has not been stolen. Should you not have the bill of sale, you will need to contact the seller, and both of you will need to fill out a bill of sale together. If you and the seller are not in the same geographic area, you can usually scan, sign and email to get this completed.

Once you have the bill of sale in-hand, you are able to visit the DMV. Be sure to have the motorcycle with you; in many states, a DMV representative will want to physically look over your motorcycle. He, or she, will compare the VIN numbers and fill out a form containing basic information about the vehicle. At this time, they may also contact the police department to perform a VIN number check, to confirm the motorcycle has not been reported stolen.

Once all of the necessary checks have been completed, you will have the proper paperwork necessary to generate a new title. At this time, you will need to provide the DMV with a physical address in that state and pay any feels relative to obtaining a title.

This is not something that happens while you wait. The new title will be mailed to the address you provided while you were at the DMV. The good news is, the DMV will most often provide you with a temporary registration until your official title arrives in the mail.
