Motorcycle Titles in Florida: What to Know

Motorcycle titles work similarly to other vehicle titles, but it’s important to understand the differences and variables involved. Florida does not have a safety inspection or equipment inspection for used motorcycles in the state, but it does require a VIN inspection for anything purchased out of state, as well as an odometer verification. There are other rules and requirements to know, as well, and they’ll all be covered here for easy access.

The Basics of Motorcycle Titles in Florida

Titling a motorcycle in Florida works the same as it does for vehicles. You need to have the original title that the buyer and the seller signed, as well as the bill of sale and the new application for the Certificate of Title. Then, you will need to pay the title and registration fees, along with any taxes, to cover the cost of the title transfer or issuance.

In some cases, you may have to have an odometer disclosure, and as mentioned, you may need a VIN verification for motorcycles that have been purchased out of state. You can always call the local title office or look online for a list of requirements before you try to obtain a title to ensure that you have everything you need.

What if There is No Title?

Some people find themselves with a motorcycle that does not have a title for one reason or another. If the purchase was made in state, it’s a much easier process. You can simply have the previous owner get a duplicate title before the sale is completed so that you don’t have to go through the hassles yourself. You can even send them the form or fill it out for them, or offer to meet them at the title office to make the transfer so that it’s easy for everyone.

If you’ve got an out-of-state motorcycle, you’ll have to request a duplicate title in that state and then make the transfer once the appropriate forms have been obtained. This is a fairly simple process, although it may take more time and you will need to be mindful that you’re giving all of the necessary information to help the process along. Sometimes that’s why it’s best to work with the pros when it comes to title issues with motorcycles in the Sunshine State.

Vermont allows owners to register motorcycles with no titles and no residency requirements, so long as their own rules are followed. You can register a bike in this state without a title and then transfer it to your own state, as one other way to get around title issues.

Ask for Help

Titles are a must for motorcycles, just like other vehicles on the road today. They need to be present to prove that the equipment exists and is properly registered and if you don’t have them, the entire process of selling or doing anything else could prove to be quite the challenge. Unfortunately, most people don’t realize that they have a title problem until they’re trying to sell or transfer it, and that can make things even more stressful.

Ask for help from title experts that can give you a better choice than the BMV. These pros can make motorcycle titling easy and hassle-free.
